If you go through aerial photography manuals or consult with experts, they will tell you that aerial photography is categorized into two main types of configuration, namely the oblique and the vertical. So, if you are looking at an aerial of view of London, and if it's a oblique picture, then it will be taken from the side of an aircraft, while a vertical picture of London will be taken from directly above the subject, which in this case is London.

Oblique Photography
Oblique photographs are those aerial photographs that are taken at an angle. If I want to take aerial photos of my house then I will incline my camera around 30 degrees from the vertical. However, this is in the case of low oblique photography, which is generally used to study an area and more often than not these photographs prove to be a good substitute for maps. On the other hand a high oblique photography is achieved when the camera is inclined to around 60 degrees from the vertical. Some of the characteristics associated with low and high oblique photography are:
* Low oblique cover a smaller area, while high oblique cover a larger area. However, the difference also lies in clarity. So an aerial view, UK in a low oblique photograph will be clear as it will cover a smaller area but if its is a high oblique aerial view of London then it will cover a larger area, but many parts of it would be unclear.
* In both the cases, the ground area covered is trapezoid, but the photographs produced are either rectangular or a square.
* Aerial photos of my house with regards to low oblique photography will not show the horizon, however in high oblique photography the horizon will always be visible.
Other Photographic Distinctions
Though, vertical and oblique are the only two types of aerial photography, there are some categorizations also made, dependant on the types of cameras being used. Therefore, your aerial view of London can be a result of multiple lens photography, convergent photography, or even panoramic photography.
